Individual treatment
a) The form of this piece will be 3D animation spliced together with live action film about 2 to 3 minutes in length. The 3D modelling will be done in Maya and will be used to create the outer space scenes, the space ships, and the aliens. The live action shots will be filmed with a video camera and edited in Premiere and After Effects. The live action shots will be of Callum running through the corridors and outside to look up at the alien mothership.
b) The type of animation will be computer generated 3D animation for the outer space scenes and the internal cockpit views, this will then be paired with special effects in After Effects and then edited with the live action footage. This animation will be done in Maya and will be made using keyframing techniques. This is the process of moving an element in the scene, like a spaceship for example, a small amount and adding a keyframe. Then moving it a little more and adding another key frame, and so on until the object you’re moving has reached its destination. This technique is very similar to traditional stop motion animation. This type of animation would be paired with a skeleton rig when animating a character.
c) The genre of this piece will be Sci-Fi. This will be very obvious in the final piece due to the strong themes of aliens and space travel, along with the futuristic style and aesthetic of the space ships. These are all big tropes in the Sci-Fi Genre. The brief states that the quality and style needs to be that of a level to rival Star Wars or Star Trek. Our piece is going to have a lot of similarities with starwars and startrek in the external space scenes, the way the ships will move and fire their lasers will be one example. There’s a general trope that Star Wars breaks in the movies, usually Green denotes Good and Red denotes Bad. However, in Star Wars the rebels and heroes’ laser blasts are Red and the Empire’s ships fire Green lasers. This is something that we’ll be emulating in our piece as Star Wars is such a huge icon of pop culture and people will instantly be reminded of it when they see the visually similar aspects.
d) The narrative of the piece as per the brief is that there’s an alien on earth posing as a human. It will start with them hearing a sound that no one else can hear, they realize that it’s the alien fleet signalling them as they make their move and begin their attack on earth. At first only one ship can be seen, it warps out of hyperspace and sits just outside earth’s atmosphere. Then, slowly at first, one by one more ships start to warp into the solar system. Then more, and more, and suddenly all of space between here and the moon is packed full of battle cruisers and attack ships all ready and waiting for the signal to launch the attack. Cut back to the alien student, they’re running through the corridors franticly now, as they run they’re looking over their shoulder and stumbling over nothing. Cut back to the alien fleet. They’re moving. They’re beginning their slow descent onto the unsuspecting world below. As the first ships begin to draw close to the atmosphere the Earth Global Defence System (Codename: ATLAS) activates and blasts them out of the sky. Flaming chunks of debris fall through the atmosphere and rain down on the world below causing panic and confusion everywhere. The fleet slow their advance and turn their attention to ATLAS. As if they were a single organism, a hive mind, they adjust course and open fire on earth’s first and most powerful line of defence, and it’s destroyed in moments sending a fresh barrage of debris hurtling towards earth. The fleet advances yet again, they breach the atmosphere and begin their final descent. The alien student busts out of a door and runs outside a few feet and looks up into the sky. The sky is blotted out by the ships, there is flaming debris hurtling through the sky and crashing down setting buildings and cars ablaze. The Mother Ship is close now, maybe a thousand feet up the alien student thinks. “This is it… The invasion has began…”

Group treatment
The form that the 2 to 3 minute animation will take is 3D Animation, 3D animation is where you animate a 3 Dimensional object on a computer through using some kind of application such as Maya. The animation itself will be the opening to a film on netflix.
The live action parts will be recorded at long road, this footage will than be used to create part of out animation. The aliens and their ships will be made on Maya, the effects like the hyperspace and explosions will be made in After effect. All of the elements of the animation will be combined using Premiere Pro.

The 3D animation will be done in Maya, using keyframes, keyframes allow you to animate without making every frame, this makes it a quite time efficient way of animating.
Things like clouds will be added over the footage using after effects, this is so we have more control over what the scene looks like.
The genre of our short film is going to be sci fi, this is going to be shown through the presence of aliens, spaceships, warp travel and space. The aliens will look nothing like humans, instead they will look like mushrooms and their ships will be nothing like anything built on earth, there mothership looks like a giant pollen spore and there ships are a wide variety of captured ships. The film will be set in the future when the earth is protected by an array of orbital defense platforms and a shield to protect it, these defences will fire at the oncoming ships but eventually be destroyed.
The story will follow a student who is part alien but is unaware of it. On one day he student starts to hear weird noises and sounds in his head coming from far away, like a beacon or a message being looped…
Then there’s a cut to space away from earth where an alien fleet of spaceships are warping into pluto's orbit .
Then the alien fleet warps to earth, as this happens and the aliens get closer to earth the signal gets louder in the student’s head, they start running down the corridor and out of the building holding their head frightened to what’s happening.
As the alien fleet enters earth’s atmosphere earth’s orbital defenses kick in and they fire on one of the alien ships, destroying it. The rest of the alien ships turn their guns to the defenses, then destroy it.
The student runs outside to see the largest ship descend from the sky with the wreckage of defences raining down from the sky.
